In Final Fantasy VII Players collected Materia and used it to not only power up their weapons, but also to use magic. Here is it mostly used as a collection, although other side quests such as the Summon Quest and Notice Board Quest will use materia as a way of completing an objective. So you have choices, you can save up the materia and work towards your materia collection or you can spend it on these other quests.
